Tom Holland’s Uncharted movie brought Nathan Drake to the big screen, though he left out the titular hero’s main love interest for games.
Warning: Spoilers for Unexplored!
the Unexplored The film introduces some of the most important characters from the titular live-action video game series, though it leaves out one undeniably important character. In the movie, UnexploredProtagonist Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) teams up with his eventual longtime accomplice Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) and Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) in a race to reclaim Ferdinand Magellan’s lost fortune. In addition to the aforementioned trio, Elena Fisher featured in the video games as Nate’s primary love interest through the Unexplored the four main video game titles. However, she does not appear in the film.
Elena was first introduced in the first title of the series, Uncharted: Among Thieveswhich was published in 2007. She initially followed Nate’s treasure-hunting efforts as a journalist, but the two eventually sparked a romance in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. At the beginning of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Nate and Elena got married and had a daughter. Elena embodied more than Nate’s love interest, as she also took up arms against enemies and aided Nate in his treacherous endeavors.
As a prequel that canonically diverges from the Playstation games, UnexploredElena’s entry into the cinematic landscape overlooks Elena’s extensive involvement in her source material’s main story. Elena’s absence from Unexplored was a missed opportunity for Sony to bring the full scope of its famous video game franchise to life. Even though the film is set in a time before the games’ main narratives, Elena’s presence could have been justified due to her altered timeline that remains separate from the Playstation series canon. Although a large company such as a Unexplored the theatrical film seems incomplete without one of the games’ most compelling characters, the decision not to feature Elena is understandable given the franchise’s promising cinematic future.
Given that UnexploredThe film’s story revolves around when Nate was a young treasure hunter and his budding partnership with Sully, Elena was not likely to appear. However, the film’s divergence from the story of the video game canon gave way to a shift in Elena’s involvement. For example, while Uncharted 3 depicts Nate first meeting Sully as a teenager, the film instead depicts the convergence of the duo as the former is in his mid-twenties. Besides, UnexploredThe film introduced antagonists Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) – who didn’t exist in the games. Sony probably chose to exclude Elena to avoid an overabundance of characters in the film. While video game fans may have enjoyed seeing Elena in live-action, those who know Unexplored for the first time would have been exceeded.
Despite Elena’s disappointing omission of Unexplored feature debut, all hope is not lost for her live-action debut. Rumors of a sequel have already surfaced, as Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman dubbed Uncharted as the studio “new blockbuster movie franchise.” Besides, UnexploredThe box office performance exceeded expectations even with its mixed reviews, as the film surpassed $100 million in domestic earnings and marks the biggest opening of 2022. If all goes according to plan, there are strong chances that Elena, like Nate’s brother Sam, and potentially other beloved characters Unexplored series of video games will grace the big screen in the future.
